FEDERAL JUDGE SENTENCES NEW ORLEANS MAN FOR DISTRIBUTING CRACK COCAINE

April 16, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DERRICK ROUTE, JR., age 30, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced by U. S. District Judge Carl J. Barbier to fifty-seven (57) months imprisonment for distributing 50 grams or more of cocaine base (crack), announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Barbier imposed five (5) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.

On March 7, 2007, ROUTE previously entered a guilty plea before Judge Barbier admitting that on or about June 7, 2007, he illegally distributed more than fifty grams of cocaine base (crack). ROUTE also admitted that on or about July 8, 2004, he illegally distributed five grams or more of cocaine base (crack).

The Court imposed a sentence within the recommended guidelines range. After sentencing, ROUTE was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service to begin his term of imprisonment.

The case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Theodore R. Carter, III.
