MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN FEDERAL COURT TO MISPRISION OF A FELONY

April 9, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BERNARD GOMIS, age 54, a resident of Senegal, pled guilty before U. S. District Judge Kurt Englehardt in federal court to misprision of a felony involving a conspiracy to bribe a public official, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten today.

BERNARD GOMIS faces a possible maximum statutory penalty of three (3) years incarceration, a $250,000 fine and one (1) year supervised release.

Court documents indicate that BERNARD GOMIS was indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2007 along with two other defendants, Louis Gomis and Jhona Jaques Vaz. Both Louis Gomis and Jhona Jaques Vaz have previously pled guilty.

According to the factual basis, BERNARD GOMIS was illegally found in the United States on May 9, 2007, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and ordered deported. BERNARD GOMIS admitted in court that he was aware that, in an attempt to secure his release from ICE custody, LOUIS GOMIS and JHONA JAQUES VAZ conspired to bribe an ICE official. Unbeknownst to the three, the ICE official was in fact an undercover ICE agent.

This investigation was conducted by Special Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Brian J. Capitelli.
