ALIEN SENTENCED FOR ILLEGALLY REENTERING THE UNITED STATES

April 2, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDGARDO FRANCISCO GOMEZ-SOTO, 33, a citizen of Honduras, was sentenced today in connection with his guilty plea to one count of illegal reentry of deported alien previously convicted of an aggravated felony, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

GOMEZ-SOTO was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to eight (8) months of imprisonment, two (2) years supervised release, and a $100 special assessment.

According to the Factual Basis, GOMEZ-SOTO, an illegal alien, was unlawfully found in New Orleans by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who determined that he had been previously deported from the United States two (2) times and subsequently reentered without having obtained the consent of the appropriate government authority. In addition to the two deportations, GOMEZ-SOTO also has convictions for shoplifting and narcotics violations.

The case was investigated by agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Irene González.
