NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 42 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON

March 19, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JAMARIO R. ALEXANDER, age 21, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced today to forty-two (42) months of imprisonment after pleading guilty to possessing a firearm after having been convicted of a previous felony offense, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, on September 19, 2007, New Orleans Police Officers were conducting a traffic stop at the corner of Tchoupitoulas Street and Louisiana Avenue, when they observed two occupants in violation of the seat belt law. As Officers approached the vehicle, ALEXANDER appeared to be shoving something under the seat. When ALEXANDER began to exit the vehicle, a plastic bag containing what later was determined to be five (5) grams of marijuana, fell to the ground. During further investigation, officers recovered a loaded 9mm rifle hidden under ALEXANDER’S seat. A criminal history check revealed that ALEXANDER was previously convicted in Orleans Parish on January 31,2005 of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and on March 31, 2006, with possession of cocaine.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Christopher Cox of the Violent Crime Unit.
