METAIRIE MAN INDICTED ON FEDERAL DRUG AND GUN CHARGES

March 17, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CALVIN EFFRON, age 36, a resident of Metairie, Louisiana, was charged in a three-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury last Thursday with possession with intent to distribute a quantity of heroin, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten and DEA Special Agent in Charge William J. Renton, Jr..

According to court documents, on March 7, 2008, federal and state law enforcement executed a federal search warrant at EFFRON’S residence, located in the 3800 block of Canterbury Lane, Metairie, Louisiana. EFFRON was found alone inside of his bedroom. A search of EFFRON’S bedroom resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of heroin, a loaded AK-47 assault rifle, and a large amount of United States Currency. Further investigation revealed that EFFRON was previously convicted of two counts of manslaughter in the Orleans Parish District Court, on November 15, 1988, and December 7, 1988.

If convicted, EFFRON faces a maximum term of life imprisonment, a fine of $1,500,000, and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.

Special Agent in Charge Renton stated:

“This is the latest effort in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s continuing battle to address the distribution of heroin, the most dangerous and addictive of all illicit narcotics. Intelligence and direct evidence have indicated an increase in sales and abuse of heroin in the post Hurricane Katrina era. Heroin is highly addictive and abusers of this nefarious drug are responsible for a disproportionate amount of the crimes plaguing the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan Area. DEA and our Federal, State and local partners will continue to closely monitor these abuse trends and to dismantle the organizations responsible for distribution.”

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police, and the New Orleans Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Samuel D. Marsh.
