FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTS LOCAL MAN ON DRUG CHARGES

March 13, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ELLERY BOYD, age 29, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was charged in a one-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for possession with intent to distribute five grams or more of crack cocaine and 500 grams or more of powder cocaine, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, on March 8, 2008, St. John Parish Sheriff’s Deputies conducted a traffice stop after observing a vehicle driven by BOYD traveling at a high rate of speed in Interstate 10 near Laplace. During a subsequent search, Deputies located two packages concealed inside the vehicle which contained approximately 900 grams of powder cocaine and approximately 26 grams of crack.

If convicted, BOYD faces a mandatory minimum of five (5) years and a maximum of forty (40) years imprisonment, a fine of $2,000,000 and at least four (4) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. BOYD is currently being held without bond following a detention hearing before United States Magistrate Judge Louis Moore, Jr.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that an indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Kevin G. Boitmann.
