NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 71 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON ON FIREARM CONVICTION

STEVEN RAMSEY, age 38, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Jay C. Zainey to 71 months imprisonment for being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Zainey imposed three (3) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment. During the three-year term, the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.

On November 6, 2007, RAMSEY pled guilty to the sole count of a Superseding Bill of Information. According to court documents, on July 31, 2007, New Orleans Police Officers conducted a patrol in the vicinity of Hamilton and Palmetto Streets in Orleans Parish, when the officers observed RAMSEY looking suspiciously at their police car. Suddenly, RAMSEY removed a firearm from his pocket and attempted to discarded it in a grassy area between the street and the sidewalk. The officers subsequently recovered a fully functional Ruger .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol from the grassy area.

Further investigation revealed that RAMSEY was convicted on May 22, 2007, in Criminal District Court for the Parish of Orleans for Aggravated Assault with a Firearm, and is prohibited from possessing a firearm. RAMSEYwas still on state probation at the time he possessed the firearm. Judge Zainey imposed RAMSEY’s federal sentence consecutive to his prior state court conviction and after sentencing, RAMSEY was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s service to begin his term of imprisonment.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as well as the New Orleans Police Department, Sixth District. The matter was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney, Duane A. Evans.
