NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO 63 MONTHS FOR FEDERAL GUN VIOLATION

February 6, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KENDRICK RILEY, age 32, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced by United States District Judge, Carl J. Barbier to sixty-three (63) months imprisonment, the maximum sentence provided for under the sentencing guidelines, for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, announced United States Attorney Jim Letten.

In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Barbier imposed three (3) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment. During the three-year term, the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of supervised release. After sentencing, RILEY was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal’s Service to immediately begin his term of imprisonment.

On October 10, 2007, RILEY, entered a plea of guilty to the one count indictment charging him with violating the federal gun control act.

According to the court documents, during a traffic stop, NOPD officers arrested RILEY after observing a firearm in plain view in the front seat of the car RILEY was driving. The investigator’s determined that RILEY had multiple prior felony convictions in New Orleans Criminal Court including Simple Robbery, and a conviction in Houston, Texas for possession of heroin. Based on this information, a federal complaint was issued on June 28, 2007 and RILEY was ordered detained without bond at a federal detention hearing held on July 6, 2007.

U. S. Attorney Jim Letten commended the Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol and Firearms and the New Orleans Police Officers involved in the arrest for their work in obtaining this conviction. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tony Gordon Sanders.
