National Fishing Week Derbies

Free Fish Day

May 30th -- Cottonwood Meadows Lake from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
May 31st -- Obenchain Reservoir from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Lakeview District BLM, in conjunction with the Fremont-Winema National Forest, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Mile High Bassmasters will sponsor two fishing derbies to celebrate National Fishing Week.

The first will be held on Wednesday, May 30th, at Cottonwood Meadows Lake from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The second will be held on Thursday, May 31st, at Obenchain Reservoir from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Invitations have been extended to local fourth graders from Lakeview and Bly Elementary Schools. Approximately seventy-five children are expected to attend the two events.

Harney County Free Fishing Day

June, 9th 2007 -- Burns Pond 7:00am-11:00am

Local organizations and agencies are planning for good weather, hungry fish, lots of participants, and all kinds of excitement. Seniors, kids, and parents are encouraged to come out and make Free Fishing Day a fun family event. Casting and fishing contests for those 16 and under or over 65 will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a free picnic lunch for everyone to follow. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in various age groups for the biggest fish caught, first fish caught, saddest fishing story, and casting accuracy. Other prizes may be presented and all participants will receive a “Fishing-is-Fun” kit during registration. Fishers are encouraged to come prepared for the day, arrive early, and register before the contests start.

12th Annual Cooper Creek Free Fishing Day

June, 9th 2007 -- Cooper Creek near Sutherlin, Oregon 9:00am-3:00pm

Although a state fishing license is not required, other state regulations such as the five trout fish limit will apply. For those not bringing their own equipment, a limited number of fishing rods, reels, hooks and bait will be available for anglers going after some of the large number of trout that will be released into Cooper Reservoir just prior to Free Fishing Day. Free Fishing Day activities will include a kids’ spin casting contest, fly casting, two fishing pools for children four years old and under, an hourly big and small fish contest, hourly door prizes and the hilarious bumbling fishermen skit.

Hyatt Lake Free Fishing Weekend

June, 9th 2007 -- Hyatt Lake Recreation Complex near Ashland, Oregon 9:00am-2:00pm, 7:00am free breakfast

This event will include free camping at Hyatt Lake Recreation Complex from Friday, June 8, 2007 until Saturday June 9, 2007. Camping is absolutely free to the public both Friday and Saturday nights! Beginning at 7:00 A.M. on Saturday, a free, hot breakfast will be provided at no cost to participants. From 9:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, BLM staff and volunteers will be on hand from 9:00 A.M until 2:00 P.M. to lend out fishing tackle, life jackets and provide bait at the Hyatt Lake boat ramp. BLM staff and volunteers will also take people out in boats to fish provide other activities in celebration of free fishing weekend. Collaborative Partners supporting this event include the United Hunters and Sportsmen’s association and the Hyatt Lake resort. The United hunters and Sportsmen are providing free breakfast. BLM is providing fishing gear, bait and other materials to support this event. The Hyatt Lake resort has generously donated the use of several boats for this event.

Thissel Pond Free Fishing Day

June, 9th 2007 -- Thissel Pond at Oregon Hatchery Research Center near Alsea, Oregon 7:30am-3:30pm

The pond will be stocked with rainbow trout. In addition, the site will accomodate the needs of the disabled and the very young.
