HOW TO USE THIS PLANNER

Welcome to Campaign Safe & Sober’s Summer/Fall 1999 Planner

Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planners are created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to help highway safety organizers at the community and state level plan meaningful, lifesaving programs and to support making every community a "Safe Community."

Looking for ideas for summer or fall activities for your highway safety program? Want to know how to participate in upcoming nationally-coordinated safety efforts? The left side of this folder has planning tools to help you plan these activities and participate in national events. Some activities are date-specific. But you can undertake many of these activities whenever they are appropriate for your state and community. Need to know who to contact or how to get training, education and consumer pieces to support these activities? The right side of this folder has tools to help you implement the ideas presented in the activities guides: state and regional contacts, relevant NHTSA programs and materials, and other helpful items such as camera-ready logos and ads.

What is Campaign Safe & Sober?

Campaign Safe & Sober is a year-round effort to focus public and media attention on critical highway safety issues and to help highway safety organizers plan meaningful, lifesaving programs. Three times a year, NHTSA publishes Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planners on a variety of topics (occupant protection, impaired driving, youth issues, back-to-school safety, etc.).

The Planners are designed to be an up-to-date resource for local community program managers to use throughout the year in planning their own local highway safety programs. Program managers can implement the ideas presented in the Planners during the time period suggested or whenever appropriate for their community.

How Can Campaign Safe & Sober Help You?

If you have planned one safety week per year in the past, think about the other programs you could run and the resources that are available. These Program Planners may also help you address new topic areas. Campaign Safe & Sober is a growing and dynamic program that takes place at the grassroots level, in communities across the nation, by people like you.

What’s New In This Planner?

To make it easier for you to connect to the NHTSA programs and materials of interest to you, this Planner includes Program Publications for Planner 19. This booklet summarizes the NHTSA programs, training opportunities, and new materials that support the activities outlined in this planner. Combined with the list of "State and Regional Contacts" included in this Planner, it will direct you to the people and pieces that are relevant to your highway safety activities.

What’s New About Campaign Safe & Sober?

One of the most exciting new developments for Campaign Safe & Sober for 1999 is our Web site: http://www.SafeandSober.org. The goal is to have all Campaign Safe & Sober Program Planners online, in a searchable and downloadable format, even before they are available in print. Some information will be available only on the Web (such as state-specific statistics). Please visit the Web site and share your ideas and questions.

One of the most important features is our e-mail list. Please be sure to add your name to receive the latest information on Campaign Safe & Sober. We will not use this list for anything other than Campaign Safe & Sober and related highway safety information and we will never release this list.
