Last week, I met with more than 20 of the 10th District’s most promising high school students for my Student Leadership Advisory Board (SLAB). From class presidents to student council representatives, SLAB members are some of the most active and involved students at their high schools. It’s a great opportunity for me to hear what issues are most important to our future leaders.
At Saturday’s meeting, we worked on one of our annual projects – public service announcements. Each year I ask SLAB students to determine a topic for a public service announcement to air on television. The students have total creative control – from determining taping locations to writing scripts. In the past, we’ve taped PSAs on topics such as warning against the dangers of internet predators and raising awareness for teen suicide. This year, we are focusing on protecting Lake Michigan.
In the coming weeks, SLAB members will be producing a message to their peers and parents – let’s protect Lake Michigan!
