First ever Super Pet Adopt-a-thon of King County to be held June 24

Come early to find your new, four-legged best friend

Two acres of dogs and cats needing a new home will be the scene this Saturday in Kent as King County hosts the first regional Super Pet Adopt-a-thon.  People will be able to choose their new best friend from hundreds of cats and dogs as 16 animal shelters and rescue groups have joined together to showcase adoptable dogs and cats of a wide variety of ages, sizes and breeds from around the state.

"I want to thank the heroes and heroines who are devoted to giving unwanted animals a second chance at a healthy, happy life," said King County Executive Ron Sims. "Because of the volunteers and staff of shelters and rescue groups, loving families have a wide array of cute, cuddly, loyal and loving dogs and cats to adopt.  We are honored to host this super-sized adopt-a-thon.

Promising to be the largest pet adoption event in King County history, the Super Pet Adopt-a-thon will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 24 at the King County Kent Animal Shelter, located at 21615 - 64th Avenue South in Kent.  The event will take place rain or shine, and prospective pet owners should come early for a wider selection of animals.

The 3rd Annual King County Pick of the Pound Dog and Cat Show will kick-off the Super Pet Adopt-a-thon at 9 a.m.  Featuring adoptable dogs and cats from each of the participating agencies, entrants will be judged on a variety of characteristics, including appearance and talent, ultimately competing for titles of Top Dog and Cool Cat of King County.

The Super Pet Adopt-a-thon replaces King County's Annual Pet Adopt-a-thon, which began in 1996 to draw attention to the large numbers of companion animals available for adoption at local shelters.

This year's Super Pet Adopt-a-thon would not have been possible without the following organizations bringing animals to adopt:

  • King County Animal Services
  • Everett Animal Shelter
  • Pasado’s Safe Haven
  • Homeward Pet Adoption Center
  • Purrfect Pals
  • Wenatchee Humane Society
  • Humane Society of Central Washington
  • Australian Cattle Dog Rescue of Western Washington
  • PAWS
  • Humane Society for Tacoma/Pierce County
  • Yakima Valley Pet Rescue
  • Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue
  • MEOW Cat Rescue
  • Bark R Us Rescue
  • Washington State Alaskan Malamute Adoption League
  • Border Collie Rescue of the Pacific Northwest

The Super Pet Adopt-a-thon will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 24 and kicks-off at 9 a.m. with the 3rd Annual King County Pick of the Pound Dog and Cat Show. This year, the event will feature adoptable dogs and cats from participating agencies competing for special prizes and the titles of Top Dog and Cool Cat of King County.  The entrants will be judged on a variety of characteristics, including appearance and talent.
