STONE MOUNTAIN MAN ARRESTED ON FEDERAL SEX TRAFFICKING AND EXTORTION CHARGES

December 30, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

David E. Nahmias, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia; Gregory Jones, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Richard Pennington, Chief, Atlanta Police Department, today announced the arrest of JIMMIE LEE JONES, also known as “Mike Spade,” 30, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, on federal charges of sex trafficking and extortion. JONES was arraigned this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Gerrilyn G. Brill. According to Nahmias and the documents and information presented in court:

JONES was charged in a sealed indictment by a federal grand jury on December 29, 2005. The indictment, now unsealed after his arrest, charges that JONES induced three victims to travel from Atlanta to Daytona Beach, Florida, on April 15, 2005, with the intent of engaging them in prostitution. The indictment also charges JONES with three counts of attempting to collect extensions of credit by using threats of violence and other threats of harm to the person, reputation and property of each of the same three victims. The victims were not identified. JONES was arrested in DeKalb County early this morning by Stone Mountain Police, who had made a traffic stop of JONES’ vehicle, and saw he was on a FBI “wanted” list. During his initial appearance, the magistrate noted JONES resides in a luxury home in Stone Mountain, and has a number of bank accounts and denied a motion for government-appointed counsel. The magistrate set JONES’ bond hearing for Wednesday before United States Magistrate Christopher Hagy, and JONES remains in custody.

United States Attorney David Nahmias said in a statement, “The investigation into this matter continues, and we would urge any women who are victims or have had similar dealings with Mr. Jones contact the FBI or the Atlanta Police Department. APD first brought this case to our attention after hearing from alleged victims. We are serious about prosecuting people who threaten, extort and violate women by forcing them into prostitution, and we seek to identify and help anyone else who has been victimized.”

The FBI can be contacted at 404-679-9000 and the Atlanta Police Department’s Hotline is 404-853-3444.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges. The defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government's burden to prove the defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.

This case is being investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and officers of the Atlanta Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Jane Wilcox Swift is prosecuting the case.
