Secretary Rice (June 14): "This isn’t a football game where you put up a score after every quarter. This is a process that will ebb and flow. There will be good days, there will be bad days, they’ll move forward, they’ll move back. That’s the way negotiations go. And so I think it’s good that they are doing this in a quiet way. So I’m not going to violate that either. I just can represent that this is a very serious discussion. They’re seriously engaging the issues. Secretary of State Rice traveled to Paris, Jerusalem and Ramallah from June 11 to June 16.
In Paris, she participated in and delivered remarks to the International Support Conference for Afghanistan. The Secretary underlined the need for continued strong support from the international community to meet the development challenges necessary to promote security and democracy in Afghanistan. She also accompanied the President for bilateral meetings with French government officials.
In Jerusalem and Ramallah, she met with senior Israeli and Palestinian officials to discuss progress being made on the ground to implement both parties’ obligations under the Roadmap, the situation in Gaza, and the effort underway to achieve agreement this year on the establishment of a Palestinian state, living side by side with Israel in peace and security.
On June 16, Secretary Rice made a surprise visit to Lebanon to meet Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and other Lebanese government officials.
