Under Secretary Burns: Travel to Moscow

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns visited Moscow, Russia April 18-20 for meetings on Iran and of the G8 Political Directors.

On April 18, Under Secretary Burns represented the United States in discussions on Iran with representatives of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the European Union, China, and Russia. They discussed the need for significant action by the United Nations Security Council in response to Iran’s decision to accelerate enrichment research.

On April 19, Under Secretary Burns and his G-8 counterparts discussed preparations for the St. Petersburg Summit, and addressed the challenges and opportunities for G8 leaders and ministers to consider as we approach the July 15-17 summit. The many important issues that the G8 Political Directors discussed include Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Middle East issues, Sudan, and freedom in Europe and Eurasia. They also discussed such issues as nonproliferation, energy security, the fight against terrorism and counter narcotics.

Under Secretary Burns also met with a number of senior Russian officials and others in Moscow regarding U.S.-Russian relations and other key foreign policy issues.
