ABSTRACT

September 1996, Vol. 119, No. 9

An experimental Consumer Price Index for the poor

Thesia I. Garner, David S. Johnson, and Mary F. Kokoski
Economists, Division of Price and Index Number Research, Bureau of Labor Statistics

The views expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent an official position of the Bureau of Labor Statistics or the views of other BLS staff members.

In this article, experimental Laspeyres, Paasche, and Fisher price indexes are derived for poor consumers. The minimal differences between these indexes and the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) in the calculation of poverty rates indicate that the poor and the general population face similar price trends.
