NIAID MEDIA AVAILABILITY
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci to Address the
United Nations on HIV/AIDS on June 10

WHAT:

Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will address the United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly in New York City next Tuesday during a special High-Level Meeting on AIDS. The meeting will focus on U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s report on the progress made and the challenges that remain in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Approximately five heads of state, two prime ministers and 80 senior officials and representatives from around the world are expected to be in attendance.

Dr. Fauci, a leading HIV/AIDS researcher and research administrator, has studied HIV/AIDS and treated HIV-infected patients since the early days of the pandemic. He was a leading architect of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and is widely recognized for his international leadership in HIV/AIDS research. See the brief biography of Dr. Fauci for more information.

In his address, Dr. Fauci will reflect on the progress that has been made in developing effective treatment and prevention strategies for HIV/AIDS and in delivering them to millions of people worldwide. He also will identify the substantial challenges that remain, especially the “implementation gap” between rich and poor countries and the public health and moral imperative to deliver the fruits of HIV research everywhere they are needed.

In the afternoon, Dr. Fauci will participate in a press conference with U.N. President of the General Assembly Srgjan Kerim and others.

The U.N. meeting presentations and the press conference will be Webcast. For complete information about the U.N. meeting, visit the U.N. 2008 High-Level Meeting on AIDS.
