United States Conference of MayorsThe primary roles of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) are to promote the development of effective national urban and suburban policy; strengthen federal-city relationships; ensure that federal policy eets urban needs; provide mayors with leadership and management tools; and create a forum so mayors can share ideas and information. The USCM was started during the Great Depression to appeal for a desperately needed municipal assistance bill. President Herbert Hoover signed the bill, marking the first time in the nation's history that federal relief was to be provided directly to cities. Since then, the USCM has become the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,183 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the USCM by its chief elected official, the mayor. Conference members speak with a united voice on matters pertaining to organizational policies and goals which are developed and guided by an executive committee and advisory board, standing committees, task forces, and other special groups. Partnership ActivitiesThrough its Cancer Awareness Program, the USCM provides information about cancer prevention and control to all mayors, who use the information to promote cancer awareness in their communities, paying special attention to underserved and high-risk populations. The Mayors' Campaign Against Breast Cancer raises awareness about breast cancer and breast cancer screening, and refers eligible women to CDC's state-based screening programs. The Mayors' Coalition for Prostate Cancer Awareness and Education is dedicated to helping men through informed decision-making about prostate cancer screening and treatment. To enhance the Cancer Awareness Program, USCM works with The Breast Cancer Resource Committee to reach African Americans. The USCM also works with the Intercultural Cancer Council (ICC), administered by the Baylor School of Medicine, and the American Cancer Society (ACS).
