National Center for Farmworker Health

The mission of the National Center for Farmworker Health (NCFH) is to improve the health status of farmworker families through the appropriate application of human, technical, and information resources.

Established in 1974, NCFH is dedicated to improving the health status of farmworker families by providing information services and products to a network of more than 500 migrant health center service sites in the United States and other organizations and individuals serving the farmworker population. NCFH offers three major programs to support its mission and address the shortage of providers and facilities for migrant farmworkers.

First, through the Leadership Development and Training program, comprehensive leadership development opportunities are delivered to current and potential migrant and community health center employees. Second, NCFH actively works on Network Development and Expansion of migrant and community health centers and other providers to increase access to primary and specialty care for farmworkers. Third, NCFH provides Network Support to the network of migrant and community health centers and other providers by offering a comprehensive package of information services that will enhance their ability to provide primary care services to migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

Partnership Activities

Through funding from CDC, NCFH developed the Cultivando la Salud: Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. Because of the success of the Cultivando la Salud (CLS) Program, CDC, NCFH, and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) have entered into an interagency agreement for a broad dissemination of the CLS Program to migrant health centers. The overarching goal of the CLS Program is to increase breast and cervical cancer screening among Hispanic migrant and seasonal farmworker women, addressing personal and environmental factors influencing mammography, clinical breast examination, breast self-examination, and Pap testing. Among other settings, the NCFH offers CLS Program training at all three of the annual Farmworker Stream Forums and, in addition, sponsors the Midwest Farmworker Stream Forum. These annual forums focus on improving health care delivery to migrant and seasonal farmworkers by providing workshops for health professionals and others who work with the population.
