CancerCare Incorporated

CancerCare is dedicated to helping people face the many challenges of a cancer diagnosis. CancerCare provides the highest quality professional support services including counseling, education, financial assistance, and practical help to people with cancer, their loved ones, bereaved family members, and health care professionals across the country. Founded in 1944, CancerCare now serves more than 80,000 people each year, of all ages, with all types of cancer, and at any stage of the disease.

Counseling*
CancerCare has more than 45 professional oncology social workers on staff. They can provide emotional support, assist you in coping with treatment and treatment side effects, help you understand and talk to your doctor, nurse, or other health care provider, and guide you to resources that can make you better able to focus on your health.

Educational Programs*
CancerCare offers free telephone education workshops, where cancer survivors and their families can listen to top experts speak about a range of survivorship topics.

Information and Referrals*
CancerCare helps survivors find resources in their communities such as counseling and support groups, home and hospice care, transportation, pain management, financial assistance, and other services they may not be aware of that exist in their own area.

Financial Needs*
CancerCare social workers can provide guidance about financial benefits and sources of help. CancerCare also provides limited grants for certain kinds of cancers and for people in some locations.

Partnership Activities

CancerCare joins CDC as one of 15 member organizations of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month campaign Board of Sponsors. These national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies work in partnership to raise awareness and provide access to screening services.

In 2004, CancerCare collaborated with almost 100 experts in cancer survivorship and public health to assist CDC and the Lance Armstrong Foundation produce A National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: Advancing Public Health Strategies. The National Action Plan identifies and prioritizes cancer survivorship needs and proposes strategies for addressing those needs within four core public health components: surveillance and applied research; communication, education, and training; programs, policies, and infrastructure; and access to quality care and services.
