AED - Academy for Educational Development

Academy for Educational Development

The Academy for Educational Development (AED) is committed to solving critical social problems in the areas of health, education, youth development and the environment, in the United States and throughout the world using education, training, social marketing, and policy analysis.

Founded in 1961, AED is an independent, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to increasing knowledge and promoting humanitarian ideals. AED applies behavioral science models to health promotion and communication campaigns, particularly in developing appropriate strategies and tools to reach underserved communities. Working in the United States and in 167 countries, AED draws on 40 years of experience to promote solutions to concerns such as child survival, gender equity, and girls' education, and applies communication, social marketing, and research strategies to promote behavior change. AED also shares knowledge and lessons learned through publications, training sessions, and professional and academic exchanges.

Partnership Activities

CDC has recently provided funding to AED for a 5-year period to reduce cervical cancer mortality disparities by promoting Pap testing and annual follow-up among working women. AED will work with the Coalition of Labor Union Women's (CLUW's) Center for Education and Research to conduct activities that will focus on educating union women about cervical cancer and screening, paying special attention to African-American women. These activities will include assessing behavior and attitudes among these women and the ways to reach them; increasing the factors that motivate them to get Pap tests, such as knowledge, skills, and attitudes; and enlisting workers' unions to distribute materials to their female members.
