National Indian Women’s Health Resource Center

The mission of the National Indian Women's Health Resource Center (NIWHRC) is to assist American Indian and Alaska Native women achieve optimal health and well being throughout their lifetime. Its goal is the establishment of a national Indian women's health network that promotes advocacy, education, policy, development, appropriate research, and encouragement of healthy lifestyle behaviors within cultural context.

In 1993, the Director of Indian Health Service (IHS) assembled a group of Indian women, recognized as leaders in the health field, to serve on a steering committee and to advise IHS on the health needs of Indian women. The Steering Committee decided to organize an independent organization to complete the tasks, and the NIWHRC was born. The members represent the 12 IHS Areas of Indian Health Service and are health providers, health planners, health administrators, and elected tribal leaders that have a common concern with the health status of Indian women.

Partnership Activities

The NIWHRC provides culturally effective technical assistance to National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP)-sponsored tribes, tribal organizations, and states, working directly with them to establish, implement, or enhance plans to reduce the burden of breast and cervical cancer in American Indian and Alaska Native women. This includes assistance in the areas of program management and development; service delivery, tracking, follow-up, and case management; quality assurance; public education and outreach; professional education; and partnership and coalition development.

The NIWHRC helps states improve their ability to reach American Indian and Alaska Native women by providing guidance on the development and dissemination of culturally sensitive information and public education programs and by conducting training sessions for better addressing the needs of American Indian and Alaska Native women. The NIWHRC has also developed and facilitated an annual cultural competency training program for CDC staff and cooperative agreement grantees.
