Livestrong - Lance Armstrong Foundation

Lance Armstrong Foundation

The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) inspires and empowers people affected by cancer. The LAF helps people with cancer focus on living; they believe that unity is strength, knowledge is power, and attitude is everything. From the moment of diagnosis, the LAF provides the practical information and tools people with cancer need to live life on their own terms. The LAF serves its mission through advocacy, public health, and research. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the LAF is located in Austin, Texas.

Partnership Activities

In 2002, the LAF joined forces with CDC to lead a public health effort to address the issues faced by the growing number of cancer survivors. The collaboration, A National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship: Advancing Public Health Strategies, charts a course for the public health community to address cancer survivorship more effectively and comprehensively, with the goal of improving the quality of life for survivors.

In 2006, two addenda were added to the National Action Plan for Cancer Survivorship:

The LAF will continue to develop and employ strategies to improve knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding cancer and cancer survivorship among these populations, including the further development and dissemination of culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate materials.

CDC has funded the LAF for a five-year period to support the LAF's expansion, development, and dissemination of programs to improve cancer survivorship among underserved Americans. The LAF developed the brochure series Living after Cancer Treatment, an introduction to survivorship that is intended to be culturally relevant, user-friendly, and easy to read. The brochures raise awareness of the physical, practical, and emotional concerns of cancer survivors, list resources, and encourage survivors to seek support. They are available free of charge.

CDC also funds the LAF's online education resource on LIVESTRONG.org where cancer survivors can learn about their cancer-related concerns, such as the physical and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment and managing day-to-day matters. In addition, survivors can download worksheets to organize and guide their cancer experiences and hear stories shared by other cancer survivors.

CDC also funds LIVESTRONG SurvivorCare, a one-on-one support program through which cancer survivors can get counseling and referrals to local resources, address financial and insurance issues, and connect to new treatments in development.
