GOV. RITTER NAMES GONZALES TO 12th DISTRICT BENCH
Gov. Bill Ritter today announced he has appointed Martin A. Gonzales of Alamosa as a District Court judge in the 12th Judicial District, which serves Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande and Saguache counties.
Gonzales is currently an Alamosa County judge, a position he has held since 2001. Since 2005, he has been a probate magistrate for Alamosa and Rio Grande counties, and since 1997 he also has been a juvenile magistrate in those counties.
"In his new role on the District Court bench, Judge Gonzales will bring the same high caliber of public service that he has provided to Alamosa and Rio Grande counties to the entire 12th District," Gov. Ritter said. "Judge Gonzales possesses a keen understanding of the law and the administration of the justice system."
From 1985 to 1987 and again from 1995 to 2001, Gonzales worked as a sole practitioner. In between, he was a partner at Motz, Gonzales & Martinez. He also worked for Edwin J. Lobato, Attorney at Law (1980-1985), and Kuenhold & Lobato (1979-1980).
Gonzales received his bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado in 1975 and his law degree from the University of Colorado in 1978.
The judgeship is a new position created pursuant to House Bill 07-1054, with an annual salary of about $119,000. The initial term of office is a provisional term of approximately two years, and if retained by the voters, a term of six years.
