Animal Disease /Food Safety Lab
From Interstate 80, take the Wells Ave. exit and proceed 1.7 miles south on Wells. Turn left on Capitol Hill Avenue. Immediately turn right into the Department of Agriculture parking lot. Mission:

The function of the Animal Disease & Food Safety Laboratory (ADFSL) in Reno and its satellite laboratory in Elko is to conduct tests for State/Federal program animal diseases, livestock issues relating to food safety, and those animal diseases that are transmissible to man.  In addition, the laboratory staff serves as a resource to Nevada’s livestock producers on matters concerning animal health.

Policy:

The laboratories do not duplicate veterinary services provided by the private sector.  Cases submitted for diagnostic evaluation should be referred by practicing veterinarians, public health officials, animal control agencies and agencies charged with regulating intestate movement of animals.

Routine necropsies should be conducted by the attending veterinarian unless a foreign animal disease is suspected. If such is the case, a  foreign animal disease diagnostician will be dispatched to conduct an investigation.  Tissues harvested for analysis may be submitted to either laboratory for processing and forwarding to appropriate outside laboratories for analysis. Laboratory results will be discussed with the referring veterinarian for interpretation and consultation with the client.  Charges for laboratory services will be billed to the submitter.

Major Accomplishments:

Nevada was declared free of hog cholera on September 24, 1965.  Bovine tuberculosis free on March 21, 1984.  Brucellosis free on September 6, 1990 and pseudorabies free on January 1, 1995.
