Charlotte Ponticelli sworn in as U.S. Labor Department’s deputy undersecretary for international affairs

WASHINGTON — Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced the appointment of Charlotte M. (Charlie) Ponticelli as deputy undersecretary for international affairs at the U.S. Department of Labor's International Labor Affairs Bureau.

Previously, Ponticelli served for almost four years as the U.S. Department of State's senior coordinator for international women's issues, followed by a year as senior advisor to the assistant secretary for population, refugees and migration.

"Charlotte's extensive State Department experience, especially on behalf of empowering women and children, will make her a great addition to ILAB," said Secretary Chao.

Ponticelli's extensive experience in government includes service at the White House Office of Legislative Affairs, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

During the administration of President George H.W. Bush, she served as director of human rights and women's affairs in the State Department's Bureau of International Organization Affairs, and at the International Republican Institute, where she designed and implemented projects to assist democratic forces in the Balkans.

From 2001 to 2002, Ponticelli was director of lectures and seminars at the Heritage Foundation.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) from Hood College and a Master of Arts degree in Spanish literature from New York University's program in Madrid.
