Background
In the genomic era, both basic and clinical research rely heavily on database-supported computational-assisted bioinformatics. During the 2006 Bioinformatics Summit meeting, we reviewed many bioinformatics programs funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation (DAIT). We identified several areas of potential collaboration, synergy, and reusable resources within the different DAIT funded bioinformatics and data management programs.
The main goals of the workshop in 2007 are to
- Identify challenges of data reuse and data transformation and integration for hypothesis generation and secondary data analysis
- Review alternative data management architectures from success stories and lessons learned and identify technological advances in promoting data integration
- Report progress on dealing with challenges of data sharing and protecting patient privacy
- Review efforts in building ontologies and data standards in the DAIT-funded research community
