Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Immunology

Ronald H. Schwartz, M.D., Ph.D., Chief

The Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Immunology studies the development, activation, tolerance, memory, differentiation, and death of thymus-derived (T) lymphocytes. Research projects currently focus on lineage commitment in the thymus, the role of danger and costimulatory signals in initiating an immune response, the molecular basis of costimulation, molecular and cellular aspects of T-cell anergy, the cloning of genes from thymic epithelial cells, dissection of in vivo models of CD4+ T-cell tolerance, and the cloning of genes involved in T-cell receptor activation-induced cell death. The laboratory offers educational training in immunology through tutorials and weekly journal clubs in addition to research training in techniques such as flow cytometry, gene cloning, and T-cell cloning. All research is carried out using mouse models.
