Las Mujeres y el Dinero (Women and Money)

Hispanic women face unique challenges when it comes to financial security. According to recent findings, their knowledge about savings and retirement is significantly less than other groups and their retirement confidence level is less than workers overall. They are most likely to rely on Social Security for retirement and expect support from their children and family as well.

To address this issue, the Women's Bureau has launched a program called Las Mujeres y el Dinero (Women and Money). Over the next year, the Women's Bureau will be sponsoring a series of ten financial education conferences across the country for Hispanic women.

""Las Mujeres y el Dinero' (Women and Money) was designed to empower Latinas to learn more about financial security and their role in planning for their own financial futures," said Director Shinae Chun. "We, as working women, should know all there is to know about taking care of ourselves." The events are as follows:

November 15, 2003 The Women’s Bureau partnered with AVANCE San Antonio to present bilingual financial workshops to more than 300 low income women. Director Chun welcomed the women recounting her early experiences as a young women new to the American culture and later visited the participants' children at the on site child care center. February 21, 2004 The theme for the Miami event Women and Money: Investing in Your Family's Future, A Building Block for Community Prosperity set the tone for the collaborative effort necessary to serve over 350 conference participants. March 27, 2004 Women Saving Money for the Future prompted a diversity of women to begin a fact-finding search for financial freedom. Temple University hosted the day of empowerment that included bi-lingual financial workshops, financial exhibitors and the certification of Latino community leaders as financial experts. May 7, 2004 The Women's Bureau worked with eighteen partners to create "Las Mujeres y el Dinero" (Women and Money) financial literacy educational event that targeted Hispanic women of all walks in life. The 200 participants attended workshops in English and Spanish to learn about money matters. June 16, 2004 The CT Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission, the Entrepreneurial Center at Hartford College for Women and the CT Permanent Commission on the Status of Women partnered with the Women's Bureau to present in Hartford, CT a successful financial educational conference for Latinas. Approximately 100 women heard speakers and participated in workshops addressing various topics on saving and investing for their future. Hartford, CT

September 16, 2004 The Women's Bureau partnered with the Ohio State Treasurer's Office, Ohio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Ohio Hispanic Coalition and Columbus State Community College to present an historic first, "Las Mujeres y el Dinero," a financial literacy conference for Latinas in Columbus, Ohio. Featuring financial education workshops basic banking, credit and debt, business development, home ownership and identity theft, the conference was part of the Ohio Women & Money Seminar Series held annually throughout the state of Ohio by Ohio State Treasurer Joseph T. September 18, 2004 Almost 200 women attended the "Savings to Retirement: Basic Financial Knowledge" in Denver where concurrent financial informational workshops in English and Spanish were offered throughout the day. October 16, 2004 175 women from metropolitan New York City area attended “ Las Mujeres y El Dinero: Asegurando Su Futuro Financiero.” The successful event included workshops on budgeting, saving, investing, insurance, real estate and retirement.
