Research Project:
MOLECULAR ANALYSIS OF DEVELOPMENT TO IMPROVE COTTON FIBER
Project Number: 6435-21000-015-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: May 16, 2008
End Date: Sep 30, 2011
Objective:
To characterize spatial, temporal, and/or genotypic variation in cotton fiber gene expression and the mechanisms leading to this variation to identify strategies for producing cotton fiber with enhanced or novel properties.
Approach:
Determine global patterns of gene expression in genotypes that differ in fiber
properties. Determine global patterns of gene expression in cotton ovule cultures that are induced to express secondary cell wall CesA genes prematurely. Use comparative genomic approaches to predict the identity of transcription factors regulating expression of the subset of cellulose synthase genes involved in secondary wall production. Validate transcription factor candidates by functional genomic approaches in model systems and cotton. This project operates under Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) and is suitable for work involving agents of moderate potential hazard to personnel and the environment. Biosafety level certified on November 9, 2007.
