Research Project: ACOUSTICS DETECTION OF PESTS IN CROPS, STRUCTURES, TREES, AND SOILS

Location: Biological Control of Pests Research Unit

Project Number: 6402-22320-005-02
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 01, 2005
End Date: May 31, 2010

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop an acoustical monitoring tool for detecting subterranean termites. Primary target pest is the Formosan subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus) in structures, trees, and soil.

Approach:
Acoustical apparatuses will be constructed to detect unseen infestations of insects. Devices will be based on recognition of sound-producing activities. Recognition will be developed from databases of sounds recorded under an array of substrates and environmental conditions.
