Children in Tribal communities and Native families are all too often exposed to various types of traumatic events that have the potential to affect their physical and emotional development in ways that cannot be reversed. It is important for Tribal service providers, parents, community members and others working with children to be aware of this information. The information in this article was compiled to assist victim advocates who work with children and their caretakers to understand how the trauma affects the child’s development when abuse has occurred – especially when it occurs early in the child’s life.
