This paper focuses on the experiences of African American women. It provides a historical and sociocultural overview of Black women's sexual victimization, describes the characteristics of Black rape survivors and rape incidents, and identifies risk factors. The paper also reviews the research on mental and physical health consequences associated with sexual violence, suggests culturally sensitive responses for service providers, and highlights the resilience of Black victim-survivors of sexual assault.
