CDC/ATSDR Office of Tribal Affairs presented “Environmental Health Capacity Building at the Turtle Mountain Community College, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, Belcourt, North Dakota” on Friday, January 24, 2003, at ATSDR’s Century Boulevard Campus in Atlanta, Georgia. Mr. Gale Harms, MS, Grants Director/Instructor at Turtle Mountain Community College made the presentation. Mr. Harms discussed the Environmental Studies Program at Turtle Mountain Community College and its impact on the college and the reservation it serves. The program increases awareness of environmental issues within the student community; investigates creative solutions to community-wide problems; and inspires many students to pursue careers in science, law, and other related fields. Mr. Harm illustrated capacity building by describing the construction of a “study house” made from straw. The house was built for students who live in crowded quarters without enough “quiet space” for study. Because the house is made primarily from straw and is properly designed, it is very energy efficient and avoids common hazards on the reservation like black mold and radon.
