Building Networks for Low Income Workers

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (CFBCI) is proud to present a conference call on ways to help low-income individuals build and expand their employment networks to help them get and retain jobs.

This workshop will focus on case studies of organizations that help participants build networking skills. Best practices, practical strategies, and step-by-step guidance on how organizations can incorporate networking into their programs are all topics discussed. Instructions for classroom activities and assignments, as well as tip sheets for planning a variety of events will also be provided.


January 30, 2007 Conference Call: Expanding the Employment Networks of Your Job Seekers

The January 30, 2007, conference call introduces participants to ways to help low-income individuals build and expand their employment networks to help them get and retain jobs.

At the end of the session, participants will know how to:

  • Improve services for job seekers by including networking activities
  • Help job-seekers develop networking skills and expand their networks
  • Encourage job seekers to become actively involved in their own job search

This session is led by Dr. Carol Clymer, Director of Labor Market Initiatives at Public/Private Ventures (www.ppv.org), a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the effectiveness of social policies, programs and community initiatives, and Laura Wyckoff, a senior consultant to P/PV. Sandee Kastrul, President and Co-Founder of i.c. stars, an organization that provides IT career programs and services to strengthen the leadership potential of inner city young adults, shares her organization's experience in implementing this approach. Tracey Allard, a senior associate in P/PV's Labor Markets department, fields questions at the end of the presentation.
