Seminar celebrates cultural diversityOctober 7, 2008
Lab is a sponsor
Kurt Steinhaus and Debbi Wersonick of the Community Programs Office (CPO) are scheduled to make presentations at the New Mexico Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Council seminar October 22 in Albuquerque. The seminar is at the African American Performing Arts Center on the Expo New Mexico grounds (formerly known as the State Fair) in Albuquerque. The Laboratory is a platinum sponsor of this event. Steinhaus will talk about Los Alamos National Security, LLC's commitment to Northern New Mexico, while Wersonick will speak on "Stars, Stripes, and Skirts: Women on the Homefront and the Battlefront." In addition, Jeannie Sandoval of Information Systems and Technology (IST) Division is accepting an achievement award on behalf of her father, former Navajo Code Talker Merrill Sandoval. Dartmouth College Adjunct Professor Alan Lelchuk is the keynote speaker. Lelchuk also will lead a plenary session titled “A Brooklyn Boy’s Love Letter to Jackie Robinson.” Objectives of this year’s seminar are to present current and relevant EEO information and education through quality plenary speakers and workshop presenters, and increasing diversity awareness and appreciation. “Of particular interest this year is the Council's efforts to partner with the New Mexico Office of African American Affairs in presenting this event,” said Maryrose Montalvo of Quality Performance (MQ-2) and the ATOMICS Safety Office. "Our theme, 'Celebrating the Dream: A Legacy of Service,' dovetails nicely with the upcoming centennial anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and recognizes New Mexico’s civil rights history and achievements,” she said. Other speakers at this year’s seminar include • Harold Bailey of the New Mexico Office of African American Affairs • Dolores Roybal, executive director of Con Alma Health Foundation • Francie Cordova of the New Mexico Human Rights Bureau • Greg Trapp of the New Mexico Commission for the Blind • Suzanne Sandoval of the Department of Energy, Albuquerque office • Rochelle Lari of Sandia National Laboratory • Cody and Shelly Unser of the First Step Foundation. There is a $99 registration fee before October 15 and $125 after October 15. Brochures for the seminar and the registration form are on the New Mexico EEO & Diversity Council Web site. For more information, contact Montalvo at 7-4988 or mmontalvo@lanl.gov by e-mail. Other Headlinessupercomputing
