PIMA Medical Institute

pima

PIMA Medical Students play an essential role at our shelter by helping clinical staff at and caring for the health and welfare of the dogs and cats in the shelter. On any single day, PIMA students can be found performing many tasks under the supervision of clinical staff and PIMA instructors. Students give meds, fluids, eye treatments, vaccinations, perform blood tests, and prepare surgical packs, etc. Students also assist Dr. Christensen with the spaying and neutering of dogs, cats and kittens. Many do not realize the care, time and expense that goes into each animal coming into our shelter. Shelter staff upon intake reviews each animal and creates an electronic file in our Chameleon Software system, Daily health checks are performed on every single animal by clinical staff- meaning close to 200 dogs, cats and kittens are checked on daily to make sure they are healthy, not losing weight, eating, etc. Paid staff is a necessity to run our operation, but PIMA students are indispensable part of our program.

The Science Diet® Shelter Nutrition Partnership has been great for our shelter because our animals are now fed consistently with a high-quality diet and we no longer have to rely on the variables involved with donated food. We look forward to saving thousands of dollars in food cost. Additionally, Hill's Pet Nutrition provides KCACC with an essential line of nutritional products designed specifically for our special needs animals. The partnership also involves on-site staff training concerning canine and feline nutrition.
