Belle Haven Park & Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, Alexandria, VA
Bird Walks
Members of the Friends of Dyke Marsh lead bird walks, weather permitting, starting at the Belle Haven Picnic Area. Leaders assist visitors in observing birds along the Potomac River and adjoining islands and mudflats. Note: Programs are curtailed for the Christmas Bird Counts during part of each December/early January. (Free!)

Carousel Tours
Join a ranger to get a closer look at the beautiful Dentzel carousel which was installed in 1921. Find out how it was made, how it works, and about the rest of the amusement park attractions that were built around it. Learn about the civil rights protests in June 1960. And, see how the National Park Service, with donated funds, has restored the carousel to its original glory. (Free!)

Park Tours
A park ranger will lead you on a 45-minute walking tour of Glen Echo Park. Learn about its fascinating history and the popular arts and dance program that now flourishes here. Along the way, the ranger will lead you briefly through the Spanish Ballroom, the Dentzel carousel, the remains of the Crystal Pool, and at least two of the park’s art studios. (Free!)

CONSTRUCTION

1.  Humpback Bridge Construction Project - Learn about upcoming construction work along the George Washington Memorial Parkway and how it could affect your commute or visit. Updates are posted regularly at www.humpbackbridge.dot.gov

2. Mount Vernon Circle Project - Learn about construction work along the Parkway near George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens.

2. Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project  - This includes related closures/detours along the Mount Vernon Trail near Jones Point Park.


MAJOR PROJECTS

1. Development of Dyke Marsh Environmental Impact Statement - The George Washington Memorial Parkway, a unit of the National Park Service (NPS), has started development of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to help guide future restoration and management alternatives for Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, which is located 1 mile south of Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, in Fairfax County. 

2. Draft Environmental Assessment for the Rehabilitation of the North Section of George Washington Memorial Parkway - The National Park Service at the George Washington Memorial Parkway has recently embarked on a draft environmental assessment for the rehabilitation of the north section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway. 

3.   Jones Point Park Environmental Assessment - The National Park Service (NPS) has completed the environmental review process for the Jones Point Park Environmental Assessment (EA).

4. Great Falls Park Final General Management Plan/ Environmental Impact Statement  - The final General Management Plan is online.

Did You Know?
Tents and trailers used the Holly and Laurel Picnic Areas before the Greenbelt Park campground was built. The camping areas in Greenbelt Park, Maryland were constructed in 1965 and 1966 as a part of Mission 66.
