Personal Protective Technology

Outputs: Conferences

NIOSH has conducted the following conferences over the past several years to obtain stakeholder input to program and project planning in the areas of research, standards development, PPE evaluation, and respirator certification activities:

NIOSH Public Meetings

National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory Public Meeting
December 2, 2008, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The NIOSH, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL), conducted a public meeting on December 2, 2008 to discuss current respirator standards development projects for powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR); air fed suits; and open-circuit, self-contained breathing apparatus, end-of-service-life indicators. The NIOSH Personal Protective Technology program action planning to address National Academies program evaluation recommendations were also discussed. The meeting was held at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport, 1111 Airport Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15231 .

National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory Public Meeting
August 20, 2008, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The NIOSH, National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL), conducted a public meeting on August 20, 2008 to discuss current respirator standards development projects for closed-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus; the reevaluation of NIOSH limitations on and precaution for safe use of positive-pressure closed-circuit self-contained breathing apparatus; supplied air respirators; and the mechanical connector design used in the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Air-Purifying Respirator (APR). The meeting was held at the Sheraton Station Square Hotel, 300 West Station Square Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15219-1122.

National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory Public Meeting
June 26, 2007, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
NIOSH is moving forward on plans to develop Total Inward Leakage (TIL) testing as part of respirator certification. TIL requirements will initially be required for half-mask air-purifying particulate filtering respirator certification with plans to later include similar requirements for all respirator certifications. Recent trends in the field of personal protective equipment (PPE) testing have focused on the need to effectively evaluate PPE systems performance for TIL under laboratory conditions. While total inward leakage testing performed under laboratory conditions does not necessarily reflect expected actual field level PPE performance, it does represent a criterion for performance that influences PPE design. Although TIL testing is intended to quantify the ability of respirators to fit a range of individuals, it is not intended to replace individual fit testing as mandated by OSHA.

NIOSH Manufacturers' Meetings

National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory Stakeholder Meeting
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Personal Protective Technology (PPT) Program will conduct a stakeholder meeting on March 3, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at the Pittsburgh Airport, 1111 Airport Blvd., Pittsburgh Pennsylvania 15231. Presentation topics will include current and future personal protective technology research projects and there will be an opportunity for discussion following the presentations. There will also be a poster session. Additional information will be provided and posted on our website as the time gets closer and the agenda is formulated.

National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory Stakeholder Meeting
March 6, 2008, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL), conducted a stakeholder meeting on March 6, 2008, at the Doubletree Hotel Pittsburgh Airport, 8402 University Boulevard, Moon Township, Pennsylvania. During this meeting, NPPTL discussed current and future personal protective technology (PPT) research projects with an opportunity for discussion following the presentations, including a poster session.

Respirator Manufacturers Meeting
January 24, 2008, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory (NPPTL), hosted a meeting for all respirator manufacturers. All manufacturers, manufacturer application preparers, and other interested parties were welcome to attend. The meeting was held on January 24th, 2008, at the DoubleTree Pittsburgh Airport Hotel, 8402 University Blvd, Moon Township, Pennsylvania.

NIOSH Workshops and Meetings

Standing Committee on Personal Protective Equipment for Workplace Safety and Health
March 4, 2009, Washington, DC
Keck Center of the National Academies of Science
Topic: Discuss Centers of Excellence (COE) concept

NIOSH Surveillance Coordination Group (SCG) meeting
December 10-11, 2008, Morgantown, WV

NIOSH Associate Director for Science (ADS) Lead Team Retreat
November 19-20, 2008, Pittsburgh, PA

NIOSH No Fit Test Respirator Workshop

November 6, 2008, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
This workshop focused on the nature and process of product innovation and development in negative pressure half-facepiece respirators to gauge the current "state of the art" and to stimulate new designs or approaches for improved respirator fit. The results of this workshop will lead to a better understanding of how future NIOSH research can encourage on-going development of better fitting respirators without compromising long-term protection.

Workshops on Self-Contained Self-Rescue Breathing Systems (SCSR)
February 12, 2008 in Wheeling, WV, and on March 11, 2008 in Denver CO
Workshops to solicit information from SCSR user groups and technology developers were held on February 12, 2008 in Wheeling, WV, and on March 11, 2008 in Denver CO. Information obtained will be considered in the development of redesign criteria for the next-generation SCSR. The information gathered at the 2005 workshops resulted in recommendations for the development of both a combination carbon monoxide filter self-rescuer/self-contained self-rescuer (FSR/SCSR) and a dockable self-contained self-rescuer. Each one-day workshop will include discussion on lessons learned from recent mine disasters, impact of MINERS and S-MINERS Act on SCSR development, and development of a course of action.
