Sick Leave

Full-time employees hired before December 1, 1992, accrue sick leave at the rate of 12 hours per month. Those hired after December 1, 1992, accrue sick leave at the rate of 8 hours per month. Sick leave is not a part of wages or salary, and the unused balance is not paid on termination. Sick leave cannot be used before it has been accrued and cannot be advanced. Sick leave may not be used in the place of vacation; however, vacation may be substituted for sick leave. For more information on sick leave, please refer to P 730-3 (pdf).

What happens to sick leave and vacation time when an employee terminates employment or retires?

Termination of TCP2 Employee or TCP1 Employee Ineligible to Retire

  • Paid for any accrued vacation time that remains unused.
  • Not paid for unused sick leave.

Retirement of Employee From TCP1

  • Paid for any accrued vacation time that remains unused.
  • Not paid for unused sick leave.
  • Any unused sick leave is converted to service credit (if retirement is completed within 120 days of last day worked).
