Research Project: CONSERVATION EFFECTS ASSESSMENT PROJECT- GRAZINGLANDS

Location: Southwest Watershed Research

Project Number: 5342-12660-004-09
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jun 01, 2008
End Date: Sep 30, 2008

Objective:
To provide quantitative information and analytical tools that can be used to evaluate the impact of selected grazingland conservation practices on natural resource values. Primary task is to complete the development and validation of the hillslope scale Rangeland Hydrology and Erosion Model and complete model user documentation in association with staff at Reno, NV and Boise, ID. Secondary task is to evaluate the SWAT model using historical and new field treatments (burning) for the ARS Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed. The third task is the development of rangeland database to run SWAT for the western United States in association with staff at Temple, TX.

Approach:
This objective will be achieved by improving inventorying and monitoring techniques and conducting field measurements of the impacts of brush control, prescribe burning, vegetative seeding, grazing systems, and other conservation practices on soil and water quality including the movement of nutrients and particulate matter and significant changes in biodiversity.
