Arizona Historymakers
A video created by the Arizona Historical Society
featuring prominent Arizonans, including Rose Mofford, former
governor and Arizona's first female chief executive; Robert T.
McCall, renowned state artist; Newton Rosenzweig, jeweler and
community leader; Adam Diaz, Hispanic community leader; and Robert
and Katherine Herberger, philanthropists.
The Arizona Historical Society, the state's oldest
cultural institution, was founded in 1884. Its mission is to
collect, preserve, interpret and disseminate the history of
Arizona. Its Central Arizona Divison's museum, located in Tempe,
exists to enrich the cultural knowledge of state residents and
visitors and to introduce them to Arizona Historymakers whose
portraits and contributions are displayed in a special exhibition
hall. Historymakers are defined as those living men and women with
substantial ties to Arizona who have distinguished themselves in
such areas as the arts, education, entertainment, athletics,
communications, and community service. Those selected are honored
at a biannual Historymakers Gala and Recognition Program, a
black-tie event designed to establish recognition of outstanding
Arizonans; to increase public awareness of the Tempe-based museum;
to contribute to the museum's artifact and archival collections;
and to raise funds for exhibits and other programs assisting the
Arizona Historical Society in fulfilling its mission. Each
Historymaker is invited to participate in oral history and portrait
sessions and to contribute a personal item to the museum's
collections.
Along with the video, "Arizona Historymakers Gala V,
1999," the project includes ten pages of text on Arizona
Historymakers, 1999.
