Grand Rapids Teacher Recognized As ‘Star’

Ehlers congratulates Forest Hills Northern HS teacher Judy Walton for being ‘Star of Teaching’

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Congressman Vernon J. Ehlers extends his congratulations to Judy Walton, a social studies teacher at Forest Hills Northern High School who was recognized by the U.S. Department of Education today as Michigan’s 2008 No Child Left Behind American Star of Teaching.

“I would like to offer my sincerest congratulations to Judy Walton on this achievement,” said Congressman Ehlers. “As her students can attest, Judy has shown a deep passion for teaching, and engages her students in the subject material in unique and interesting ways. She has played an important role in the lives of many young people, and she truly deserves this recognition.”

Judy Walton teaches Advanced Placement American History, Advanced Placement Government, American History, Debate, and the Study of Law. She also coaches the school’s Michigan Mock Trial Competition and Debate teams, winning the 2006-2007 Ziegelmueller Award given to the best scholastic debaters in Michigan.

Selected teachers of all grade levels and disciplines will be recognized nationwide as American Stars of Teaching. One teacher from each state and the District of Columbia was selected by a committee of former teachers from a group of over 5,000 nominations.
