Provides access to a clearinghouse of information on Asian studies, edited by T. Matthew Ciolek of the Coombs Computing Unit of the Australian National University (ANU) for the World-Wide Web Virtual Library. Contains an overview of the site, which keeps track of leading information facilities in the field of Asian studies. Gives a breakdown by country for facilities. Includes instructions on submitting information to the archive.

The National Diet Library has digitized important documents relating to the Constitution of Japan and makes them available at this site. The digitized documents can be enlarged and read online. The site includes background information on historical figures involved in the Constitution of Japan, a glossary, links, a bibliography and many useful documents. The site is also available in Japanese.

This NDL site provides bibliographic information of books on Japan in Western languages acquired by the National Diet Library of Japan in and after 2002 on a quarterly basis (issued in January, April, July and October). The site is also available in Japanese.

The British Library: Japanese Section  (http://www.bl.uk/collections/japanese.html)
The Japanese collections of the Oriental and India Office Collections at the British Library. The total holdings of printed books now amount to some 67,000 items with approximately 6,000 serials and 20 newspaper titles. In addition there are around 300 manuscripts. Noteworthy are materials gathered by Engelbert Kaempfer (1651-1716), a German physician and traveller who had stayed in Japan from 1690-92, and those amassed by Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) during his sojourns in Japan from 1823 to 1829 and again from 1859 to 1862, among others.

The C. V. Starr East Asian Library is one of the major collections for the study of East Asia in the United States, with more than 810,000 volumes of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Mongol, Manchu, and Western-language materials and over 6,600 periodical titles, and more than 55 newspapers. The Japanese collection excels in literature, history, and philosophy.

This database website is part of the National Institute for Japanese Literature's effort to construct a digital resource center for Japanese literary research resources and information using the internet. Database include a Nara Ehon Image Database that has digitized images of "picture-books," a Book Review Database, an Overseas Research Center Database, Researcher Directories, and databases for Japanese books in Italy and France. Digital Archives for Architectural Space (DAAS) was founded to collect information on architectural drawings and photographs digitally. This site includes a list of other architectural archives in Japan.

The Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan at Harvard University makes available up-to-date materials on contemporary Japan to scholars, students and researchers. These resources, which include serials, monographs, an extensive clippings file, and electronic and other databases, have particular relevance to the social sciences. The DCJ's clippings file is a collection of articles in over 130 categories clipped from major Japanese and American newspapers. The articles about Japanese sources include an explanation of "Grey Literature" - non-conventional publications with limited distribution.

Duke University's East Asian Collection focuses on modern and contemporary Chinese, Japanese and Korean materials in the social sciences and humanities. With over 90,000 volumes (55,000 in Japanese, 32,000 in Chinese and 3,900 in Korean in 2006), and many databases in Japanese, Chinese and Korean, this expanding collection is recognized as a regional resource center for researchers and students in the field of East Asian studies.

UC Berkeley is one of the universities in the United States which is dedicated to East Asian Studies. In October, 2007, the University newly opened C.V. Starr East Asian Library where more than 900,000 volumes of primarily Chinese, Japanese and Korean materials including woodblock prints, rare maps and scrolls are stored.

Gordon W. Prange Collection, UM Libraries  (http://www.lib.umd.edu/PRC/)
The Gordon W. Prange Collection is a comprehensive collection of publications issued in Japan during the immediate post-World War II years, 1945-1949. The contents were once the files of the Civil Censorship Detachment (CCD), a unit of the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers' (SCAP) Press, The Collection includes 17,000 newspaper titles, 75,000 books and pamphlets, 10,000 news agency photos, 13,000 magazine titles, 90 posters, and 640 maps. The contents of the Collection are now indexed online by The Institute of 20th Century Media, Japan at http://www8.ocn.ne.jp/~m20th/. The Prange Collection site is also available in Japanese.

This is the homepage of the Shiryou Hensan-jo (The Historiographical Institute, HI) of the University of Tokyo. In addition to general historiography, the Institute is also involved in the analysis, compilation, and publication of historical source materials concerning Japan. The Institute has become a major center of Japanese historical research, and makes historical sources available through its library, publications, and recently, its database. This database provides access to the images in the prints and photograph collection of the History of Medicine Division (HMD) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). JACAR is an archive of digitalized images of Japanese historical records related to Asia from the Meiji period to the end of WWII. Original records are held in the National Archives of Japan, the Diplomatic Record Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Library of the National Institute for Defense Studies of the National Defense Agency. Digital images of the full text are available in Japanese and can be searched in English.

The Japan Documentation Center was established in 1992 to collect and disseminate Japanese public policy information. The project successfully developed an information management system and a database of over 5,000 items that includes source materials in fields such as economics, commerce and industry, law, politics, the environment, and social conditions. With the closing of the Japan Documentation Center (JDC) on March 31, 2000, the JDC database will not be updated, but the collection will be serviced by the Japanese Section staff in the Asian Division.

The Library of the Japan Foundation maintains a collection on Japanese studies and international exchange, and as such, serves foreign scholars and students currently in Japan and Japanese concerned with international exchange. JLA is the largest library association in Japan. The site includes a history of the JLA, an organizational chart, information on membership and publications, library statistics, and a directory of libraries in Japan. The archives contain a growing collection of books, periodicals, documents, maps, photographs, art and film relating to the Japanese experience in the United States from the mid-1800s, when the first Japanese pioneers set foot on American soil, to the present. Roper Center's Japanese Data Archive has two components. The first is JPOLL, the Japan Public Opinion Location Library, a comprehensive, searchable, web-based archive of public opinion data from Japan. It contains survey questions and answers covering social, political, and economic topics. Users can view the complete text of both the questionnaire and the responses in English. The second is Japanese Data Library, which is made up of thousands of Japanese survey research studies, with archive search tool and downloadable catalog.

The University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh have put together this collection of classical Japanese literature on the WWW. Includes such online texts as Manyoshu 万葉集, Ise monogatari 伊勢物語, Kagero nikki 蜻蛉日記, Genji monogatari 源氏物語, Heike monogatari 平家物語 and more. It also includes online texts of modern Japanese literature including works by such authors as Mori Ogai, Natsume Soseki, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, and Hayashi Fumiko. Kano Bunko / 狩野文庫画像データベース Image database of the Kano Collection, Tohoku University Library   (http://www2.library.tohoku.ac.jp/kano/kano_top-e.html)
The Kano Collection consists of about 108,000 items of classical books, scrolls, documents, and art objects on all subjects of the Edo period from the collection of Kokichi Kano (1865-1942), a famous Meiji era philosopher and educator. The database includes 13,700 images from about 730 illustrated items (color prints, maps, etc.) among the microfilmed version of classical Japanese books and documents in the Kano Collection. The site is also available in Japanese.

Kansai Digital Archives and Rekishi Kaido  (http://www.kiis.or.jp/rekishi/index-e.html)
The Kansai Digital Archives lists participating municipalities and their historical cultural resources. The Rekishi Kaido lists historical cultural resources in and around the Kansai region. It covers five areas (Ise-Asuka-Nara-Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe) representing five periods of Japanese history.

Webcat Plus is the online cataloging system provided by NII (National Institute of Informatics). It is a Union Catalog of books and serials that covers participating university libraries throughout Japan. The database can be used to verify readings for names and titles, to check for journal holdings information, and names of Japanese libraries. The database can be searched in Japanese or English. If you are looking for a particular book and want to know which libraries in Japan have it, this is the database to check.

NCC: North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources / 北米日本研究資料調整協議会  (http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~ncc/)
NCC is the main council for Japanese librarians in North America. It coordinates, develops, and locates funding for projects related to Japanese collections and their librarians. It disseminates information for librarians and scholars. The site includes a list of members, committees, minutes from past meetings, a newsletter, and links. Of note are its recommendations for acquiring library materials on Japanese Studies and the use of Japanese Databases in North American libraries.

The National Diet Library of Japan now has an online tool that allows users to access full-text versions of over 30,000 Meiji period books.

Established in 1948, the National Diet Library of Japan (NDL) is the only national library in Japan. It offers on-site services in three facilities: Tokyo Main Library, Kansai-kan (opened in October 2002), and the International Library of Children's Literature (opened in May 2002). Like the Library of Congress, NDL assists Diet members with their duties. It also provides library services for the Executive and Judicial branches of the government, and the general public. It is the only depository library in Japan, acquiring all materials published in Japan. The website includes the online version of the Japanese National Bibliography Weekly List (in Japanese) and online bibliographic information of forthcoming Books on Japan (in Western Languages). To search the online database of NDL for its holdings, search under Web OPAC. The site is also available in Japanese.

National Institute of Japanese Literature / 国文学研究資料館  (http://www.nijl.ac.jp)
This archive collects, sorts, and preserves Japanese literature with a focus on recent times (since the Meiji period, 1868-1912) for the purpose of assisting researchers with their study of Japanese literature. The site includes several databases, including one for classical Japanese literature (Nihon koten bungaku), Japanese books (kokusho), modern literature since Meiji (kindai bunken), OPAC and others. Includes information on Web sites of Japanese scholarly societies.

National Women's Education Center (NWEC) / 国立女性教育会館  (http://www.nwec.jp/)
affiliated with the Ministry of Education (now the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), the NWEC offers programs on training and research on women and the family. It promotes women's education with the goal of creating a gender-equal society. The Center collects, compiles, and disseminates information on women and women's education. The site offers the WINET Database, which allows you to search for information regarding women and the family available on the internet. It includes a database on literature (books), a local government publication database, Japanese periodical articles database, database of newspaper articles regarding women and the family in national and local newspapers, and databases of original research surveys conducted by the NWEC, including statistics on women and the family. OCLC Asia Pacific was founded in 1986 as a division of OCLC, the Online Computer Library Center, Inc., the largest computer and telecommunications network of libraries in the world. OCLC Asia Pacific serves to enhance the services of libraries in the Asia Pacific region. The site offers reference services, cataloging and resource sharing, and more, to over 2,000 libraries.

The Institute (Ohara Shakai Mondai Kenkyujo) sponsors research activities in the social sciences and runs a library which specializes in books and journals in the fields of social and labor issues. It also has archives of primary materials of social and labor movements. The site includes a digital library and poster exhibit of 2700 pre-1945 Japanese posters and 1400 posters of labor and social movements in post-1945 Japan. Its site also has Industrial Welfare Association Posters and 180 pre-1945 election campaign posters. This site is also available in Japanese.

The Toyo Bunko (est. 1917) is the oldest and largest research library devoted to Asian Studies in Japan. Located in Tokyo, the library has 880,000 volumes (365,000 titles) of books and other sources relevant to Asian Studies. Its two main collections are: 1. Iwasaki Collection - Chinese books and rare Japanese books, as well as, ukiyo-e, scroll paintings, and books that trace the history of printing from ancient times to the end of the 19th century 2. Morrison Collection - 24,000 volumes of works on Asia in twelve European languages.
