Research Resources for
the Small Business
Do you represent a small
business in need of
specialized research
assistance? Did you
know that Brookhaven National Laboratory
may be available to help you
meet your needs?
While most research
conducted at Brookhaven is
directed and financially supported by the U.S. Department of Energy
(DOE), Laboratory scientists
and technicians can also
participate in the research
programs of other
organizations - including
your small business.
Are you aware of the range
of expertise and facilities
available at Brookhaven?
Did you know that in
addition to conducting
research in energy
technologies, Brookhaven is
also a leader in physical,
biomedical and environmental
sciences research?
Small businesses are well
advised to investigate all
of the various Federal and
State-supported programs for
which they may qualify.
Some
- like regional SBDCs and
high technology incubators -
are designed to help you in
the development of a
business plan, marketing, or
by providing an affordable
modern laboratory or
business facility.
Other programs, like the
Small Business Innovative
Research (SBIR) and Small
Business Technology Transfer
(STTR) grants, provide
direct financial assistance
- not loans, but true grants
- to aid in the development
of your research and
products.
Small
businesses can benefit
greatly by investigating all
of these resources and
developing appropriate short
and long-term plans for
their usage. At
Brookhaven, the
Office of Intellectual
Property and Sponsored
Research
is committed to being
well-informed about all of
these important small
business initiatives so that
we can aid you and our
scientists in advancing your
research, your product
development, your business.
Economic development is a
goal that virtually all
Federal agencies and
facilities share in some
form or fashion and, at
Brookhaven, we are committed
to achieving that goal by
working with small
businesses in advanced
technology fields.
One of the more common ways
that a small business and
national laboratory can team
up to conduct research is
through acquisition of an
SBIR or STTR grant.
These are grant
programs financed by a broad
range of Federal agencies -
not loans which would
require repayment - and, as
such, are highly
competitive.
Nonetheless, the Federal
government is making
available more than $1.6
billion in the current
fiscal year for SBIR and
STTR programs combined.
Research collaborations
involving the Lab can
greatly strengthen many
competitive SBIR and STTR
grant proposals. Following
are two links we believe you
will find useful as you
investigate SBIR and STTR
funding opportunities.
