Pioneer spirits in period dress will tell their stories of travel to the west and settlement in Jacksonville and the Rogue Valley. Tours are approximately 1 hour long. Tickets go on sale September 11, 2008 and may be purchased at the Jacksonville Visitor Center or by calling (541) 899-8118.

The Civil War Veterans' Project and Winema Chapter's Contribution to Historic Cemeteries Preservation. - DAR -- Winema Chapter Meeting

Judy Rycraft Juntunen, Commissioner, Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries; and Benton County historian.
Currently, Judy is working with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to identify Civil War veterans buried in Benton County. Fifty years ago members of Winema Chapter did surveys of the county's cemeteries. Because grave markers and records have disappeared through the years, the group preserved a record of names and burial locations that would have been lost.

Researching People and Places Workshop

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) and the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries (OCHC) will co-sponsor a two day workshop to explore sources for researching people and places. Topics will include how to find sources, what information can be gleaned from sources, electronic sources and GIS data, and the reliability and presentation of information from various sources (internet, self published, oral history, family history, etc.). We will explore local resources including the State Archives! There is no fee for attending the workshop, but attendance is limited to 30.

Come for our once-a-year tour of the Lone Fir at night! Luminaria light the pathway through the darkened cemetery as we meet some real characters from Portland's past who are notorious or met an untimely or unseemly death.
