Cooperative State Parks/U.S. Forest Service Host Job Description
Park Name: Lagoon Campground (U.S. Forest Service – Oregon Dunes NRA)

Volunteer Type: Shorebird /Snowy Plover Program Host

Duties: Duties involve making frequent contact with the public visiting the ocean shore at snowy plover nesting areas.   The purpose of the public contact is to make visitors aware of current snowy plover beach closure areas and provide information to public about the life history and status of the western snowy plover.  Work is outside in all types of weather.  A cell phone and/or radio will be provided for communication with biologists and enforcement personnel.

Duties include:
  • Greeting beach visitors and informing them of beach closures around active snowy plover nesting sites.
  • Contact with State and Federal agency employees and Plover Biologists
  • Safely operating a State of Oregon vehicle
  • Monitoring visitor compliance of beach closures
  • Reporting non-compliance to enforcement officials
  • Keeping a logbook of public contacts and compliance
  • Assist with maintaining closures by replacing ropes and signs when fallen or removed
  • Assist Forest Service staff with visitor service duties, interpretive programs or other duties as agreed upon.
Duration: May 21 – August 31.

Days per week: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.  Other days flexible.

Hours per week: 20

Campground Description: Lagoon campground is located near the Siltcoos River in shorepine and huckleberry.  Lagoon trail surrounds the campground and is 1 mile in length.  The campground is approximately 1 mile from the Pacific Ocean.  Hookups include water, electric and septic, on asphalt pad.  No phone hookup available.

Campground Location: The campground is just off Highway 101, 7 miles south of Florence. 

Special Qualifications: Interest and ability to greet a diverse public; ability to walk 1-2 miles on sandy beaches.  Preference will be given to couples and to those with education experience, management experience or other people skills.
