Research Project: SEDIMENT TRANSPORT RATES AND SOURCES IN REFERENCE AND IMPACTED WATERSHEDS FOR DEVELOPING CLEAN-SEDIMENT TMDLS

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

Project Number: 6408-13000-018-05
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 19, 2002
End Date: Jun 18, 2007

Objective:
Assess sedimentation issues in reservoirs in the Mid South and elsewhere. Some emphasis will be placed on dating ancient sediments in older reservoirs, such as oxbow lakes. Also, the transfer of compounds from agricultural activities to reservoirs will be examined.

Approach:
Cores of reservoir sediments will be collected. Laboratory analyses will be performed to identify sedimentation rates, chemical characteristics, and textural characteristics of stored sediments. Acoustic profiling will be used to enhance the quality of data collected from reservoirs. Local and regional trends in reservoir sedimentation will be defined where possible.
