THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE IS AN EQUAL
OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.
ANNOUNCEMENT NO: RA-06-038H
POSITION: Research Soil Scientist/Agricultural Engineer/Environmental
Engineer/Hydraulic Engineer/Geologist
LOCATION: Oxford, MS
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The position is located the Upland Erosion Processes
Research Unit at the USDA-ARS National Sedimentation Laboratory (NSL),
Oxford, MS. The incumbent will participate in a collaborative research
initiative between the NSL and the National Center for Computational
Hydroscience and Engineering at the University of Mississippi (NCCHE)
to develop next generation two-dimensional numerical models of field
scale runoff and soil erosion prediction that take into account the influences
of tillage-induced oriented roughness on flow concentration and ephemeral
gully formation. The assignment will center on the development of efficient
methods and techniques to obtain high resolution (at least 3 to 5m raster
size) digital elevation models (DEMs) to supplement existing 10-m and
30-m DEM GIS layers that are sufficiently accurate to permit design of
conservation practices at the field scale.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in Soil Science, Agricultural/Environmental/Hydraulic
Engineering, Geology or a closely related field. A working knowledge
in GIS and remote sensing technologies, GPS, field measurements, agricultural
practices, and soil erosion science are required. Knowledge and experience
in use of models for the prediction of runoff and soil erosion such
as RUSLE2, WEPP, etc. are highly desirable. A minimum background in
numerical methods will be highly useful to interact with model developers.
