Research Project:
DIAGNOSIS AND CONTROL OF SWINE INFLUENZA
Location: Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock
Project Number: 3625-32000-088-02
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Oct 01, 2005
End Date: Sep 30, 2008
Objective:
To provide greater insight into the swine influenza virus/host relationship that may contribute to: 1) improving economic conditions for pork producers and the rural economy; and 2) to developing better influenza vaccines for animals and people.
Approach:
Establish long-term collaboration between U.S. and Chinese veterinarians specializing in swine diseases. Improve current methods for diagnosing swine influenza in the U.S. and P.R. China. Test the cross-protective quality of the modified live vaccine (MLV) against current and future swine influenza virus (SIV) field isolates. Investigate molecular mechanisms of SIV virulence.
